On Friday, January 17, 2020 the Annex, a creative agency and venue in Chicago, hosted ‘All In Due Time’, the first solo exhibit by Mary Colleen, better known as MURRZ, illustrator and artist who is a recent transplant in Chicago from Brooklyn. Since her entry into the art scene, she has participated in group art exhibits in NYC, Chicago, LA, and Manila, but never has she explored a show so personal and interactive.
Left to right: MURRZ collected wheat pastes from NY and Chicago artists to pay homage to both cities. (Artists include: ZRO Productivity, Fire Falco, HML Designs, Raddington Falls, Holly Shinnara, Clue, Frillz, Bird Milk, Una Michelada, Dome)/ Scott Anthony Englert (Instagram: @studioscotty) from The Annex built the water tower installation that was the focal point of the venue space/ Installation “Reaching for Air”
Utilizing her primary medium of ink illustrations on paper, MURRZ sought to showcase her muses and interests, juxtaposing her public persona (displayed in canvas and an interactive mural paying homage to musicians the world lost too soon) and inner-most struggles, including anxiety (an emotion many artists are plagued by in a world where social media can dictate ones career). The one-night only exhibit was a personal journey of the duality MURRZ, and many of today’s artists, must possess: delivering work to the masses , while creating new self-reflective work that is a departure from the popular style and yet equally as impactful.

While in Chicago I was able to spend some time with MURRZ at Lo Rez Brewing and while there asked her a few questions over a couple of Rye Barrel Aged Rye Saisons (This is me pretending to know beer):
Me: What’s the last good meal you ate and where from? MURRZ: Crispy chicken milanese from 5 Rabanitos in Pilsen in Chicago. It came with garlic mashed potatoes and I can never say no to anything with garlic!
Me: Who’s someone that’s pushing/ inspiring you right now? MURRZ: At the moment, black work tattoo artists; right now I’m into Burpi (IG: @burpi_brebzy)
Me: If you could steal any one piece of art from anywhere; what would it be? MURRZ: “She Was a Surrealist Woman - She Was Like A Figure in a Dream” by Salvador Dali. It's at the Salvador Dali museum in Figueres, Spain
Me: If you woke up tomorrow as a fictional character, or with any superpower; who or what would it be? MURRZ: I've always wanted the ability to fly like a bird or jump super high like the Hulk.
Me: Any exciting projects or events people can know about? MURRZ: I'm part of a group art show “Your Highness Art Bizarre” on February 1st here in Chicago at C.C’s Art Garage. Pull up!
