Picasso Baby: 7 Years Later

Updated: Jan 5, 2020

7 years ago JAY-Z released his Magna Carta Holy Grail album. Released on July 4, 2013; the album cover featured the “Alpheus and Arethusa” sculpture from the MET's collection. One of the standout singles for me was "Picasso Baby". Between my love for the arts, the album cover, title of the song and the quick art references in the lyrics, I was so intrigued.

7 years later, I now know a lot more than I did then; and my love for the arts have kick-started this very site you're on. Looking back, it's pretty cool to re-listen and catch what most listeners may not have.

Koons. Picasso. Rothko. Condo. Christie's. MoMa. Bacon. Jean Michel. Warhol. Art Basel. Leonardo Da Vinci. Met. Louvre. Tate Modern. Mona Lisa. Basquiat. SAMO.

Behind the Scenes with Jay-Z, Marina Abramović, and Judd Apatow

Jay's lyrics are full of name drops and references that make you want to spend all day on google. If this intrigues you, check out the linked Vogue articles and enjoy the short film and video shot at the Pace Gallery below.
